Under the act APGM 1937, 22 Regional testing laboratories have been established to formulate standards and conduct physical and chemical analysis of agricultural and allied commodities. One of these labs is situated in Kolkata, West Bengal which specifically carries out chemical testing of herbs, spices and condiments. Kolkata lab has state of the art facilities and modern technology which makes it adept for setting standards for this particular agricultural produce. Some herbs and condiments which are subjected to testing are turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder. These herbs undergo tests like, test for ash, test for crude fibre, volatile oil and many others. These laboratories are set up by directorate of market and inspection which comes under the aegis of ministry of agriculture and farmerâ€™s welfare, therefore has great responsibility to ensure quality of agricultural produce.
